NEW YORK: Songs of Refuge and Resistance
Featuring the Westerlies, including Riley Mulherkar, (BM '14, MM '15, jazz studies) and Andy Clausen (BM' 14, jazz studies).

Sunday, August 25, 2019 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Songs of Refuge and Resistance is a collaboration between singer/composer Theo Bleckmann and brass quartet The Westerlies. These border-crossing artists have deep roots in both jazz and contemporary music alike, and created and commissioned a whole new body of work for voice and brass. These songs highlight music’s integral role and power in protest movements and in providing internal solace amidst external turmoil.

A new sonic landscape is explored in this unique pairing of voice and brass, amplifying timeless voices of truth both past and present including Bertolt Brecht, Joni Mitchell, James Baldwin, Mitsuye Yamada, Woody Guthrie, Emma Gonzalez, and others. Bleckmann adds angelic choirs and dark murky textures through occasional live vocal looping, expanding The Westerlies' warm and refined, almost string-like sound. There is an inherent sense of power, solace and beauty in these songs; the message is resistance, but the music is irresistible.

November 2019

Emi Ferguson (BM ’09, MM ’12, flute; MM ’11, historical performance) and continuo band Ruckus perform J.S. Bach’s Sonata for Flute and Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034: III. Andante at Harvard University’s Horner Room. The group also recorded this work in their recently released album, Fly the Coop, hailed as “blindingly impressive” by the New York Times, which features new arrangements of Bach’s Flute Sonatas and Keyboard Preludes. You can see them perform the album live on Sunday, November 17 in Upper Manhattan’s Corpus Christi Church.
This video features Juilliard Historical Performance alums Clay Zeller-Townson (MM ’13) on baroque bassoon, Paul Holmes Morton (MM ’16) on theorbo, baroque bassist Doug Balliett (MM ’12), harpist/harpsichordist/organist Parker Ramsay (MM ’17, harp), and Shirley Hunt and Stephen Stubbs on baroque cello and guitar, respectively. Ferguson and Balliett also serve on Juilliard’s Evening Division faculty.
