DETROIT: VISIONS Contemporary Ballet
Traces (of what makes us who we are)

Wednesday, December 18, 2019 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Featured alumni: Ranardo-Domeico Grays ('92, Dance)

In VISIONS Contemporary Ballet: Traces (of what makes us who we are) this ethnically diverse company led by Ranardo-Domeico Grays, artistic director/choreographer, relays universal messages of the human experience. A five-year brain cancer survivor, Ranardo is creatively flourishing, presenting spiritually uplifting contemporary ballet works. The company will be premiering his new piece, “Still Healing,” inspired by stories of people who experience pain and suffering through no fault of their own, yet they persevere.  Also on the program will be “Dash – Between,” about living life in the dash between "born" and "died;" “Through the Valley,” which explores facing obstacles in one’s fight for health and life; and “Roots,” rooted in prayer, about self-growth. Company Dancers performing this evening will be Alexandria Amstutz, Asia Bonilla, Lilly Ann Comstock, Mathew Ortiz, and Nick Sartori.

November 2019

Emi Ferguson (BM ’09, MM ’12, flute; MM ’11, historical performance) and continuo band Ruckus perform J.S. Bach’s Sonata for Flute and Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034: III. Andante at Harvard University’s Horner Room. The group also recorded this work in their recently released album, Fly the Coop, hailed as “blindingly impressive” by the New York Times, which features new arrangements of Bach’s Flute Sonatas and Keyboard Preludes. You can see them perform the album live on Sunday, November 17 in Upper Manhattan’s Corpus Christi Church.
This video features Juilliard Historical Performance alums Clay Zeller-Townson (MM ’13) on baroque bassoon, Paul Holmes Morton (MM ’16) on theorbo, baroque bassist Doug Balliett (MM ’12), harpist/harpsichordist/organist Parker Ramsay (MM ’17, harp), and Shirley Hunt and Stephen Stubbs on baroque cello and guitar, respectively. Ferguson and Balliett also serve on Juilliard’s Evening Division faculty.
