Featured Alumni: Ryan Keberle (AD '03, jazz studies)
Reverso is a transatlantic group of outstanding improvisers, at ease in both jazz and classical music. The music is inspired by the aesthetics of the composers of the group of six (Poulenc, Milhaud, Honegger, Auric, Tailleferre and Durey). Jean Cocteau said that the only common point between these composers, apart from their friendship, was the "rescue of the melodic line". Frank Woeste, co-leader and composer of the group, has developed, over the course of albums and tours, a singular language that makes him an unclassifiable and polymorphous artist, sideman of prestigious musicians but also producer. Vincent Courtois, an amazing cellist, is as at home in the classical repertoire as in free improvisations or in the song. Ryan Keberle, another co-leader and composer of the group, is a key trombonist on the New York scene, whether with his band "Catharsis" or with Maria Schneider and Dave Douglas.
Emi Ferguson (BM ’09, MM ’12, flute; MM ’11, historical performance) and continuo band Ruckus perform J.S. Bach’s Sonata for Flute and Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034: III. Andante at Harvard University’s Horner Room. The group also recorded this work in their recently released album, Fly the Coop, hailed as “blindingly impressive” by the New York Times, which features new arrangements of Bach’s Flute Sonatas and Keyboard Preludes. You can see them perform the album live on Sunday, November 17 in Upper Manhattan’s Corpus Christi Church. This video features Juilliard Historical Performance alums Clay Zeller-Townson (MM ’13) on baroque bassoon, Paul Holmes Morton (MM ’16) on theorbo, baroque bassist Doug Balliett (MM ’12), harpist/harpsichordist/organist Parker Ramsay (MM ’17, harp), and Shirley Hunt and Stephen Stubbs on baroque cello and guitar, respectively. Ferguson and Balliett also serve on Juilliard’s Evening Division faculty.
