HOUSTON: ROCO Connections
ROCO Connections: We Were the Music

ROCO is honored to partner with Holocaust Museum of Houston on Thursday, March 5th for "We Were the Music” – a chamber concert featuring the world premieres of two ROCO commissions by Bruce Adolphe, part of his season triptych in tribute to women musicians who survived the Holocaust.

Dedicated to cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and pianist Alice Herz-Sommer, "We Were the Music" and "Music Is a Dream" will be joined on the program by the music of HindemithZemlinsky, and Piazzolla, plus you'll hear a rare, unpublished work by Italian composer and teacher Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The world premiere of the next commission in ROCO’s FIFteen Project, by Isabelle Ganz, rounds out the evening.

Featured ROCO musicians will be founder, artistic director and principal oboist Alecia Lawyer; principal cellist Richard Belcher, and pianist Mei Rui.

Prior to the concert, join us for a reception of light bites and refreshments beginning at 6:00 pm, including an opportunity to tour the Museum's permanent galleries.

November 2019

Emi Ferguson (BM ’09, MM ’12, flute; MM ’11, historical performance) and continuo band Ruckus perform J.S. Bach’s Sonata for Flute and Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034: III. Andante at Harvard University’s Horner Room. The group also recorded this work in their recently released album, Fly the Coop, hailed as “blindingly impressive” by the New York Times, which features new arrangements of Bach’s Flute Sonatas and Keyboard Preludes. You can see them perform the album live on Sunday, November 17 in Upper Manhattan’s Corpus Christi Church.
This video features Juilliard Historical Performance alums Clay Zeller-Townson (MM ’13) on baroque bassoon, Paul Holmes Morton (MM ’16) on theorbo, baroque bassist Doug Balliett (MM ’12), harpist/harpsichordist/organist Parker Ramsay (MM ’17, harp), and Shirley Hunt and Stephen Stubbs on baroque cello and guitar, respectively. Ferguson and Balliett also serve on Juilliard’s Evening Division faculty.
